The Power of Touch

It was on a beautiful, chilly January morning, sitting in front of the fireplace in a Café, with a seeping cup of hot cocoa nearby and the beautiful Gisèle (a magnificent French bulldog) who had just chosen to climb onto my lap that I chose to experience this moment in total consciousness, in coherence with this beautiful animal.

How? You might ask…

Simply by choosing to let go of all worries, to breathe deeply and gently stroke Gisèle, who was restless on my legs but welcomed the touch.

I brought my awareness to the feel of my fingertips on this beautiful friend’s fur:

  • the softness of her coat,
  • the shine of each hair
  • the reflection of each sunbeam like an infinity of microscopic rainbows
  •  the gentle warmth of her body transmitting itself to mine
  • the vibration of her breath beneath my hands

Little by little, the beautiful Gisèle calmed down, her eyes settled, and she simply began to look around us without worrying about the crumbs on the floor, the beverage near her, or the people entering the Café. And I was even calmer, settled. What a moment of grace!

In these moments, I can see what it does for the animals: the animal can free itself from all the accumulated stress. Deep relaxation assists the body in loosening up, stimulating the digestive system, the respiratory system, the detoxification system, and the evacuation system all at once. All cells, including immunity, are in their optimal state. The brain and the whole body take advantage of this calm state to free themselves of all emotional and physical toxins and become aware of everything at once. They are in the present moment.
* This is the essence of being an animal.

The beauty is that for humans as well, it’s a moment of release from accumulated stress, relaxation, and Peace.

Taking a few minutes out of your day to experience this connection with your animal, or someone else’s, can bring them great peace.

A few minutes of calm, breathing slowly, offering caresses while bringing our awareness into the feeling of the contact of our fingers, our hands on their fur, is enough to assist their bodies, minds, and emotions to return to or remain in a state of calm. It’s the equivalent of cultivating peace within them, letting it expand and become more deeply rooted. This will make it easier for them to return to calm quickly when the situation is less comfortable.

For, in this moment of peace, nothing matters; everything is simultaneously there and present.

Love and appreciation flow freely between animal and human. This is social coherence, the intelligence of the heart in action. ** It’s the power of touch.

I invite you to celebrate love this February by sharing these precious moments with the animals around you. You’ll see how a few minutes a day can transform their day and yours!

Celebrate pure love through the power of touch!
